Ongoing
Alberta Science Network was established in 1991 as a not for profit charity. We deliver curriculum linked science outreach in schools to students and their teachers across Alberta. The program was paused for several years due to the pandemic and we are now working to rebuild our volunteer base and re-engage teachers with our programs. ASN Mission: We bring science to life for students through hands-on activities and provide educators with tools and resources to get kids excited about science. ASN Vision: Young people inspired by science who have fun discovering its relevance to everyday life. Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom is our signature Provincial program. Practicing Scientists and Engineers volunteer in schools to inspire students with curriculum linked presentations. We will help you to create a hands on and age appropriate presentation that will excite young minds and potentially motivate students to think about science with renewed interest in future years. We teach students about the wonders of science around us and how important it is to be engaged in it. Presentations are typically one hour in length and delivered to one classroom at a time. Teachers are always present to supervise their class as you interact with students to deliver your material. While we offer presentations on grade 1 to 9 curriculum topics, historically most presentations were delivered to grades 2 to 6 as many of those teachers lack post-secondary science experience. You can expect 5 to 10 hours of up front time as we help you to prepare your content. After you are ready, we coordinate all aspects of the promotion of the program and facilitate your scheduling with the teacher(s). We ask that you commit to present two or three times per year to one or two classrooms each time. Presentations are scheduled during regular school hours so you must have the ability to take time off from your employment as necessary. Join our volunteer team as we get back into schools and inspire the next generation in science. Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
You are in it to have fun and give back to your profession and community. You want to spark the interest and curiosity of the next generation. You want to be astounded, energized and humbled by students as they ask you questions that make you have to think. You want to see the "lights go on" in kids faces when they learn new things.
