Mentor - Indigenous Youth
Do you have a passion for mentoring youth? Maybe this role is for you! Our IndigeNight groups meet every Thursday from 5 - 8 pm to build community by connecting, sharing, and supporting young people. The goal IndigeNight is a group offered to support indigenous cultural awareness and teachings. The ideal Youth Mentor is an excellent listener who is trustworthy, caring, responsible, and positive. Preference will be given to individuals with lived experience or experience supporting young people. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of Indigenous issues including strong cultural knowledge and ceremonial experience. Knowledge of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRC) 94 Calls to Action is an asset Volunteer will provide support with planning, set up and take down/clean-up of weekly groups. Liaise with Youth Health Centre staff and provide mentorship to youth. Support staff and interact with young people while building relationships before during and after the group on a weekly basis. Youth mentors at The Alex Youth Health Centre are adult individuals responsible for contributing to creating programs to improve our young people's well-being by providing role models that can support them in building relationships/connections, advocating, and helping them navigate systems and resources in the community. Preference will be given to those who self-identify as Indigenous. The Alex is committed to embedding the principles of equity, inclusion, and diversity across the organization. We are committed to removing barriers equity-seeking groups face and encourage (but do not require) members of these groups to self-identify. In accordance with our strategic priorities, we particularly encourage applications from individuals who self-identify as racialized* or Indigenous (First Nation, Metis, or Inuit). *The term "racialized" is used here instead of the more outdated and inaccurate terms "racial minority, "visible minority", "person of color", or "non-White".
Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
1) To form community connections 2) To make a difference in the lives of youth 3) To get resume building experience 4) To get a possible reference for future employment 5) To gain experience in the social work/youth work field
