Youth Mentor - Queermunity

2840-2 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB, T2A 7X9 [map]
2 hours / weekly
Every Monday from 6:30 to 8:00 pm
Do you have experience, lived or otherwise, supporting young people from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community? Are you interested in mentoring youth?

Youth mentors at The Alex Youth Centre are adult individuals responsible for contributing to creating programs to improve our young people's well-being by providing role models that can support them in building relationships/connections, advocating, and helping them navigate systems and resources in the community.

The primary role of a Queermunity mentor is to develop a personal and positive rapport with young people, which involves consistent weekly meetings and ensuring the meeting times are enjoyable, inclusive, comfortable, and safe. In addition, Queermunity mentors will specifically provide support to 2SLGBTQIA+ young people who may face challenges when coming out, including but not limited to judgement/stigma and acceptance from friends and family.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Have good listening skills and build relationships with young people to foster a sense of belonging, build self-confidence and encourage young people to learn new skills.
- Have good supervisory skills to support Queermunity facilitator with set up, co-facilitation, and clean up after the group.
- Communicate effectively and notify the group facilitator when you are absent or away.

The ideal Youth Mentor is an excellent listener who is trustworthy, caring, responsible, and positive. Preference will be given to individuals with lived experience or experience supporting young people from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

The Alex is committed to embedding the principles of equity, inclusion, and diversity across the organization. We are committed to removing barriers equity-seeking groups face and encourage (but do not require) members of these groups to self-identify. In accordance with our strategic priorities, we particularly encourage applications from individuals who self-identify as racialized* or Indigenous (First Nation, Metis, or Inuit). *The term "racialized" is used here instead of the more outdated and inaccurate terms "racial minority, "visible minority", "person of colour", or "non-White"
