Equine Therapy Volunteer - Edmonton

Overview 

This program allows youth & young adults with disabilities who love horses. Each class is tailored to the special needs of these individuals and is facilitated by an instructor with support of a physical therapist. It combines physical therapy with the opportunity to experience something new and is sure to boost confidence and self-esteem!  

Cerebral Palsy Alberta (CPAA) offers volunteer opportunities for all commitment levels including one-time events, ongoing programs, or office-based work. Volunteers play a fundamental role in the programs and services that we offer to our members and the community. There is an opportunity for individuals of all abilities to become volunteers. 

Responsibilities as Horse Handler 

 Help with set up and take down of equipment including but not limited to cones, wooden poles, and balls. 

Lead a horse by walking or trotting. 

Assist with tacking up horses. 

Assist with grooming the horse and explaining how to groom a horse. 

Attending session in safe close toed footwear. 

Some may be required to haul the horses to the program location. 


Responsibilities as a Side Walker 

Help with set up and take down of equipment including but not limited to cones, wooden poles, and balls. 

Walk beside a client sitting on a horse and if necessary, help the client balance or reposition. 

Assist with grooming the horse- follow the instruction of the horse handler. 

Check in with the client to ensure they are feeling safe. 

Attending session in safe close toed footwear. 

Help explain activities to the clients. 

Participate in catching and throwing activities with the clients. 

Detailed orientation prior to the program will cover all details and provide the most updated list of tasks and responsibilities.
