Prospect Human Services (Prospect) is a charitable not for profit employment services agency who prides itself on assisting persons and employers struggling to address their employment needs. We help all Albertans and particularly take pride in assisting those experiencing substantial barriers to fully integrating into our community and to our workforce. DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION Prospect’s Board of Directors is made up of volunteers with a diverse range of talents and perspectives, and we’re looking for more. You’ll be joining an eclectic group that is doing great work for an organization that helps people who face barriers to employment overcome those obstacles and find rewarding jobs. What will you do? Board members play a governance role in supporting the strategic vision of Prospect. As volunteers, Board members commit to 6-8 hours per quarter on Board related activities, including Board and Committee meetings, participation in Board Retreats and attendance at Prospect events. As a Governance Board, directors focus on strategic planning, financial oversight and policy development. They also support and provide high level oversight to the CEO who is directly responsible for operational matters. Duties Include: • Understand and demonstrate a commitment to Prospect’s vision, mission and brand values • Prepare for, attend, and participate in bi-monthly board meetings, committee meetings, Prospect’s annual Board Retreat, and other ad-hoc meetings as needed • Act as an ambassador for Prospect in the community • Participate in Prospect sponsored staff and program events • Leverage relationships in the community to help grow Prospect’s philanthropic supporters • Keep up to date with issues and trends that affect the organization • Understand and monitor the organization’s financial affairs • Avoid any potential conflicts of interest • Understand and maintain confidentiality • Ensure the organization is complying with all legal and regulatory requirements • Serve as an advisor to the CEO in developing and implementing Prospect’s strategic plan • Approve Prospect’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions • Contribute to an annual performance evaluation of the CEO • Assist the CEO and Board Chair to identify and recruit new Board Members • Support the CEO and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out What does it take to do this job? We are seeking applicants from a variety of backgrounds. Previous experience with Boards and/or not-for-profit organizations is desirable, however training is provided. Term of Office Directors may hold office for a term of three years and can serve a maximum of three consecutive terms, subject to the Society’s bylaws. Board meetings are conducted virtually and in-person to accommodate Board Members who do not live in Calgary or prefer virtual meetings. Committee meetings are currently conducted virtually only.
