Starlings Pen Pal: Letter Writing Companion for Youth impacted by parental substance use challenges
Hope Kit & Letter-Writing Companions support youth impacted by the stress and stigma of a parent’s substance use by offering care, consistency, and encouragement through handwritten notes and the thoughtful assembly of Hope Kits. This role helps youth feel seen, valued, and less alone, without requiring direct contact or crisis support. Responsibilities: Letter Writing (Primary) Write warm, affirming letters or notes to youth, using Starlings-provided prompts and trauma-informed guidelines Reflect hope, validation, and care (not advice, fixing, or problem-solving) Follow clear boundaries around language, disclosure, and tone Letters are reviewed and paired by Starlings staff or peer mentors Hope Kit Assembly Help pack Hope Kits in Calgary with care and intention Include letters, art supplies, comfort items, and resource materials Prepare kits for mailing or pick-up Support occasional kit-packing days or at-home packing (when applicable) What This Role Is Not No direct contact with youth No crisis response or counselling No expectation to share personal lived experience No requirement to “get it right”, care and effort matter most
Certification or Education Required
Peer Support Certification (but not necessary)
