High School Math Tutor (NE Locations)
Summary YMCA Calgary is seeking energetic and committed volunteer mathematics tutors interested in helping high school youth in a group tutoring setting. Tutoring Table aims to remove the financial barrier of private tutoring to assist students in passing their registered math programs. Tutoring has been proven to show positive results in terms of helping youth improve their academic achievement, school attendance, and providing a connection to a positive adult. Volunteer tutors serve as guides in the students’ learning, assisting with challenging math concepts and enhancing students’ confidence in problem solving. Volunteers are provided with ongoing training, in both math curriculum and skills in positive youth guidance. Time Commitment This position requires an 8-month commitment. Volunteers are expected to commit to one (1) volunteer shift per week. Shifts are 2 hours in length and typically scheduled after school times between 4:00 and 6:30 pm. Duties and Responsibilities Health and Safety Maintain a safe environment by following YMCA Calgary policies and procedures Build relationships with members, participants, and YMCA staff and volunteers Communicate with YMCA Staff regarding any situations during your volunteer shift Program Support 1. Ensure safety, communication, and a sense of belonging are high priorities 2. Manage risks associated with participation in programs 3. Volunteer tutors should be comfortable: > Working with high school youth in a group setting > Communicating with and teaching youth struggling in math > Engaging in a positive, strengths-based approach Skills At YMCA Calgary we ensure our volunteers are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will have the following: 1. Strong high school math knowledge 2. Commitment towards teaching and mentoring 3. Experience working with high school youth in a group setting 4. Ability to engage with youth using a positive, strengths-based approach
Certification or Education Required
Must have completed a minimum of Math 20-1 STEM background is considered an asset.
