ABOUT US

The Aquatic Biosphere Society of Canada is preparing for the next stages of development and is seeking individuals with a keen interest in being a creative, positive force in in that growth. 

The Aquatic Biosphere Society of Canada is a registered charity, and is behind the development of the Aquatic Biosphere Project. It is a planned legacy eco-attraction in Edmonton that presents the “Story of Water” to visitors, via a public conservation aquarium, educational centre and a conservation & research facility. 

As an organisation rooted in biodiversity, it also follows that DEI is inherent in all aspects of the organisation, collaboration is part of our DNA.  Candidates are welcome from across Canada as we operate the board within a virtual/digital structure. 

THE COMMITMENT

We are seeking individuals to help us move the Board into a governance and strategic planning structure from the current working board of a start-up. As a governance board, meetings would be held four times per year. In this transition phase expect up to 6 meetings until the transition is complete. 

Meetings are held online, team oriented project management software is used to track projects and progress. All Board members will receive orientation and training on the software tools and will be expected to have read any materials distributed prior to the meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS

We value candidates who are open to joining a transitional board, are respectful of diverse contributions and skills, collaborative, and passionate about the mission. An enjoyment of, or at least a high tolerance of exceptional fish jokes, and a commitment to community building should be a consideration when applying.

Required attributes include:
•	Clear understanding of non-profit governance;
•	Analytical thinking and ability to make substantive contributions to the strategic plan;
•	Visionary approach and ability to see the organization in broad terms;
•	Ability to work on diverse teams and communicate effectively;
•	Strong written communication skills for grant writing and policy development and review;
•	Fundraising or capital campaign experience an asset
•	Willingness to network and make connections on behalf of the Society;
•	Comfortable with working virtually, experience with project management software, online communications such as Slack or Discord.
•	Effective communication skills; English fluency in speaking and writing is required;
•	Long-term (minimum one year) commitment.
