Skating support volunteer

Our Skating Program offers highly supported, confidence-building sessions for children and youth who are learning to skate or looking to strengthen their skills. Each session includes time to get ready, practice putting on skates, and participating in skating-themed warm ups before heading onto the ice. Once on the rink, children and youth work on essential skating mechanics such as stopping, turning, and safely getting up after a fall, all while taking part in fun games and activities. With knowledgeable staff and occupational therapy support, every child learns in a supportive, encouraging environment designed to build skills, independence, and enjoyment on the ice.

Volunteer Responsibilities Outlined:
•	Assist with set-up and preparation at the beginning of your shift
•	Greet participants and their families upon their arrival and direct participants to the appropriate area 
•	Assist in creating a creating a social, fun, safe and enjoyable group environment where the participants can explore skating
•	Assist & encourage those individuals participating in the activities
•	Participate in activities as a peer model
•	Socialize, form trust and build relationships
•	The volunteer may be assigned to working one-on-one with a participant to further support their social skill development
•	Follow the guidelines regarding safety 
•	Actively participate with staff in de-briefing meetings and clean up at the end of each shift 
•	Gain a thorough understanding of the Centre for Autism Services Alberta, our mission, vision, goals, values, programs and services

Qualifications/Competencies Required:
•      Minimum age to volunteer is 18 years old
•      Have a love of people and appreciation for the diversity of individuals with Autism
•	Possess a passion for engaging in imaginative play and physical activity 
•	Possess good interpersonal and communication skills
•	Be willing and interested to engage with a diverse group of people
•	Have a good attitude and be eager to learn
•	Be able to read, follow instructions and work independently
•	Must demonstrate superb reliability. Absences without notice are not tolerated 
•	Be a proficient skater and have the ability to be active during the majority of your shift
•	Be willing to accept feedback on your performance
•	Be willing to make the minimum commitment of 3 sessions total (each session is 6 - 8 weeks)
•	Have the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality 
•	Have a willingness to develop or further develop behavioural skills 
•	Have a clean Clear Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Record Check (done through us at no cost to you)
