Volunteer Board President
Location: Edmonton, Alberta (Remote) Are you a passionate leader who believes in the power of the human–animal bond to change lives? Chimo Animal Assisted Wellness and Learning Society (CAAWLS) is seeking a dedicated Volunteer Board President to guide our Board of Directors and help shape the future of our organization. The Board President provides leadership and direction to the Board of Directors in fulfilling CAAWLS’s mission, vision, and strategic goals. As the chief volunteer officer, the President ensures effective governance, fosters collaboration between the Board and the Director of Operations, and serves as an ambassador for the organization in the community. Key Responsibilities: Leadership & Governance: - Chair all Board meetings and set agendas in collaboration with the Director of Operations and Secretary. - Ensure the Board functions effectively, with clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability. - Lead the Board in strategic planning and policy development aligned with CAAWLS’s mission. - Support a culture of inclusivity, collaboration, and transparency within the organization. Support & Oversight: - Act as the primary liaison between the Board and Director of Operations, providing guidance and support while respecting operational boundaries. - Ensure appropriate oversight of finances, risk management, and compliance with legal and ethical standards. - Facilitate performance evaluations for the Director of Operations and the Board as a whole. Advocacy & Representation: - Serve as a key spokesperson and ambassador for CAAWLS within the community and with stakeholders. - Support fundraising and partnership efforts through advocacy, relationship building, and donor engagement. - Represent the organization at public events, community gatherings, and strategic meetings as needed. Board Development: - Promote recruitment, onboarding, and development of diverse, skilled, and engaged Board members. - Foster a positive and productive team dynamic among Board members.
Certification or Education Required
Previous experience serving on a non-profit Board or in a leadership role preferred. Strong understanding of governance, strategic planning, and non-profit management. Excellent communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills. Passion for animal-assisted wellness and community well-being. Professional background in management, business, human resources, veterinary, legal or psychology fields is an asset.
