ESL Assistant
The Newcomer Centre offers a wide range of English classes and learning activities for newcomers. Volunteers support ESL teachers in the classroom, lead small groups in separate activities or help people one-on-one. Above all, ESL volunteers welcome newcomers to Edmonton and introduce them to Canadian life! Key Responsibilities: -Assist the teacher in English classes with different in-class activities -Support newcomers in reading practice -Listen to the student’s reading and correct pronunciation -Provide one-on-one English support when needed -Engage with students through conversation practice -Encourage the students to learn To Volunteer in This Role You Should: -Be mature and reliable -Speak, read and write English fluently -Take initiative and connect well with people -Be flexible, patient and a good communicator -Respect people of all cultures -Be organized, encouraging and adaptable -Be able to guide people through learning activities -Reliably commit to a volunteer schedule -Teaching, adult education or ESL experience is welcome Schedule: 1. CLB 3 (CLB - Canadian Language Benchmark) - Tuesday and/or Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. 2. CLB 2 - any day between Monday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. 3. CLB 4 - Wednesday and/or Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. 4. ECALA - Tuesday and/or Thursday afternoon only 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (ECALA will be more community-based, and will focus on only daily life English)
Additional Details & Skills Required
Orientation will be provided to volunteers when they come onboard
Certification or Education Required
Prior experience in ESL teaching will be an asset
