The Capoeira Academy Association

Capoeira Academy is an organization committed to celebrating the art form of capoeira and Afro-Brazilian music, dance and culture in Edmonton. Over 20 years ago, our Mestre Reni Ferreira came to Canada as a young man to share his ancestral knowledge and skills passed down for generations from enslaved Africans in Brazil who created Capoeira as a way to preserve their humanity, their cultural customs and their skills in self-protection. Now Capoeira has spread all over the world to celebrate this culture of liberation which fights back against oppression and injustice through movement, music, joy and community building. The Capoeira Academy's mandate is to support Reni's responsibilities as a Mestre to share his expertise, keep the roots of Capoeira strong and spread awareness of its Afro-Brazilian history.
