As an advocate for one of Canada’s top five universities—the largest in the province of Alberta—you can play a role in University of Alberta decision making through service on a governance committee. 

The University of Alberta Board of Governors is legislated by the Post-secondary Learning Act (PSLA) to manage and operate the university in accordance with the university’s mandate and to act in the best interests of the University. To assist the Board in its work, the Board has established seven Board Standing Committees and delegated to each committee responsibility and authority to make decisions on behalf of the Board in the committee's defined area of responsibility. Membership on these committees includes Non-Governor Committee Members (NGCMs), individuals who are not members of the Board of Governors but who serve as voting members of Board Standing Committees.

Opportunity:
The University of Alberta Board of Governors is seeking individuals to serve as NGCMs, with terms beginning in July 2025. All applications are welcome, however the 2025 recruitment is focused on seeking individuals with expertise in the following areas:

- information technology and information security, including cyber security*;
- financial planning and investment funds management;

     as well as experience working with / an understanding of the needs of a large, complex organization.

Time commitment:
NGCMs are appointed by the Board of Governors for a term of up to three (3) years, with the possibility of reappointment for two (2) additional terms, up to a maximum term of nine (9) years. In exceptional circumstances, the Board, in its sole discretion, may appoint a Committee member even if the appointment will result in a total term that exceeds nine (9) years.

Each NGCM should be able to commit the necessary time for committee meetings (typically four (4) per governance year), development sessions, and meeting preparation (which varies depending on the committee and individual). NGCMs may also be invited to attend occasional Board events.
