We are holding monthly Bighorn sheep monitoring, in support of our Columbia Lake Bighorn Sheep Conservation and Biodiversity project. No experience is needed to be a citizen science sheep monitor, just the ability to walk and be outside for 4-6 hours. We will provide you with orientation and tools to do the monitoring. By participating in the program, volunteers actively contribute to the project’s objectives by assisting in observing and documenting bighorn sheep sightings, recording behavioural observations, and collecting data on habitat use. The next sheep monitoring events will be on Sept 28th and Oct 15th. We will meet at The Local Coffeehouse in Fairmont at 10am. As we can be out for up to 4-6hrs it’s a good idea to pack some snacks or lunch, wear good walking shoes and dress for the weather.
Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
You can enjoy a hike in a beautiful location while also contributing to our understanding and protection of the Columbia Lake Bighorn sheep herd and their habitat. You'll get practised at identifying age and sex of the sheep, learn about their habits and some of the challenges they are facing.
