Volunteer Tutors Needed for I-CARE Adult Literacy Program - Training Starts January 2025

Commit to tutoring for minimum one year.
About I-CARE:
Founded at Douglas College in 1978, I-CARE is an individualized community adult reading education program. We offer cost-free, one-on-one tutoring to help community members with essential reading and writing skills for everyday tasks. Our learners come from diverse backgrounds and age groups.

Our Mission:
We support Canadian adults, permanent residents, and convention refugees who speak and understand English but struggle with basic literacy skills.

Volunteer Opportunity:
After completing a 30-hour training led by Douglas College instructors, volunteer tutors will be paired with learners (upon availability). Tutoring sessions are held in safe, comfortable settings at times convenient for both tutors and learners.
Additional Details & Skills Required
Background Check: Complete a criminal record check (cost covered by the program).

Training: Attend five cost-free training workshops (totaling 30 hours over five Saturdays from January to March 2025) plus three practicum sessions in literacy classes held during evenings in March.

Time Commitment: Minimum 2-hour weekly tutoring commitment plus preparation time. Flexible meeting times and locations.
Certification or Education Required
Age and Language Proficiency: Be over 19 years of age, fluent in English, and hold a High school diploma.
