Northern Lights Wildlife Society (NLWS) is a registered Canadian Charity providing care, rehabilitation, and education for injured and orphaned wildlife. NLWS has a core group of people in the form of the Langen/Landry Families. Peter and Angelika Langen are the founders, assisted by their now-grown children and spouses. Adding to the team is a small but dedicated staff and a constant stream of enthusiastic volunteers which change every few months.
The shelter is a haven for all of the mammal species of BC. Birds are triaged and sent to other shelters as they have longstanding experience and excellent facilities. Over the years NLWS has become a specialist in bear and moose re-wilding but we welcome all native BC species. Careful management strives to prevent the animals from becoming habituated so that they can be successfully released into the wild once they have grown/healed.
Since 2007 the BC Government and NLWS are facilitating the first and only re-wilding program for orphaned Grizzly Bears. You can find more details about this program on our website.

Our philosophy:
In today’s world, our wildlife faces ever-increasing challenges in their daily quest for survival. The immediate and obvious threats arise from death or injury due to such things as cars, trains, barbed wire fencing and poaching. Furthermore, the continuous loss of habitat, ignorance of wildlife needs, public perceptions, government actions and lack of data pose a monumental hurdle in the quest to provide living space for wild animals.

Through providing shelter, feed and medical care we can help injured and/or orphaned wildlife until they can be rehabilitated in their natural habitat. Not only does this supply a moral solution to the question of: “what to do with such animals”, but it also offers an excellent opportunity for educating and involving the public and creating a better understanding and respect for the animals we live with.

The careful collection of scientific data and its availability to all interested parties ensures better knowledge and provides a platform for future projects and studies.

Our mission:
- to provide young injured and/or orphaned wildlife with a safe and healthy environment.
- to mature our wards into adulthood, upon which they are released back to the wild.
- to educate the public about wildlife needs, threats and how we can take steps to avoid conflict and assist in peaceful coexistence.
- provide ongoing research to be compiled and shared with the public, educational facilities/students, government policymakers and other professionals.
