Donation Sorting
The grassroots, secular DTES Neighbourhood House (DTESNH) aims to provide a dignified welcoming space for our neighbours to participate in various community inspired programs, as well as leadership, social, and recreational opportunities. The DTES Neighbourhood House (DTES NH) is looking for a volunteer to help us with donation sorting and general cleaning and organization of our space, on Tuesdays from 10am-1pm. This is an unpaid position. VOLUNTEER DUTIES INCLUDE: - helping to unload food donation items from other volunteer's vehicles into our shopping carts, to bring them inside - sort through food donations and support staff in organizing/storing them appropriately - general cleaning duties such as helping to clean out fridges, freezers, and/or our community pantry space, general kitchen cleaning or cleaning of other areas of the DTESNH REQUIREMENTS: - understanding and support of the DTES Neighbourhood House's mission and philosophies - must be able to do some lifting of boxes that can sometimes be kind of heavy - up to approx. 30-40lbs - good communication skills (responds to emails in a timely manner, easily reachable, informs us of any planned or unplanned absences, etc. ) - able to commit to volunteering in this role for at least 2 months ASSETS: - ability to lift boxes up to 60lbs. - living or lived experience in the DTES (or other relevant lived experience) - work or volunteer experience in the DTES - interest in food security - ability to speak multiple languages (especially Cantonese or Mandarin) - sense of humour is always an asset :) APPLYING FOR THIS ROLE: Our application, screening and onboarding process includes: 1. Before confirming your volunteer role, you'll have a call with the volunteer coordinator to discuss & confirm the details of the role, make sure it's a good fit, ask any questions, and get a basic orientation before you start your first shift. The secular, grassroots Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House (DTES NH) embraces people of all ancestries, genders, ages and descriptions; annually welcoming almost 9,000 DTES residents in a community where 70% of our neighbours have low‐incomes, 700 are homeless and 5,000 are under-housed. Those who built the DTES NH put the Right to Food at the heart of our work, as nutritional vulnerability was a theme familiar to all. Our goal around the Right to Food is to reform the nutritional impact, quality, abundance and delivery of food in the DTES in consultation with residents, community food providers, non‐food community organizations, healthcare professionals, policy makers, growers/suppliers, food/beverage industry professionals and researchers.
