Seeking Yoga Instructor (paid) - Saturdays
The grassroots, secular DTES Neighbourhood House (DTESNH) aims to provide a dignified welcoming space for our neighbours to participate in various community inspired programs, as well as leadership, social, and recreational opportunities. We are looking for a volunteer to facilitate yoga classes at the DTESNH on a weekly or bi-weekly basis on Saturday afternoons from 3:30-4:30pm starting approximately February 2025. We can provide a stipend/honorarium (see below). ABOUT THE PROGRAM As part of a Wellness Initiative, we are aiming to offer beginner-level, yoga classes/sessions to our neighbours in the DTES. We currently run this program on Mondays, but are looking to add a Saturday yoga session soon. Our Monday yoga program is for adults only, however we are considering if it would be possibly to run a more family friendly yoga session on Saturdays. There will be at least 1 staff member on site during the program. Yoga will be drop-in for our community members, and will have a maximum class size of 9 or 10 people. COMPENSATION We have a budget that would allow the Yoga Instructor to receive an honorarium/stipend of $30 per yoga session. An honorarium or stipend is simply a small token of appreciation, but is not considered employment income. VOLUNTEER DUTIES - provide 1hr yoga sessions to a diverse group of DTES residents - yoga sessions should be beginner-friendly - arrive at the DTESNH 15-30min early to set up, and stay 15-30min after to cleanup/put tables back how they originally were set up REQUIREMENTS - able to do the volunteer duties listed above - certified Yoga Instructor (or has at least already started a yoga teacher training program that they are actively pursuing) - 3 month minimum commitment period (it's ok to miss/take off up to 1 week per month if needed. excluding emergencies). - Understanding of, and adherence to the DTESNH philosophies - Willingness to learn from and with peers - Read training materials in Volunteer Handbook before starting to volunteer - Must be 18 years or older to volunteer ASSETS - Experience facilitating yoga classes (for a diverse range of people of different ages and abilities is especially a bonus) - Connection to the DTES - Able to speak multiple languages - Sense of humour is always an asset :) - “go with the flow” mentality - Naloxone training - First Aid Certification - Any relevant experience APPLY Email volunteer@dtesnhouse.ca and introduce yourself to apply for this role. ABOUT THE DTES NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE: Our mission is to provide opportunities for residents to meaningfully engage with and contribute to their community in an equitable atmosphere of sharing and learning. The secular, grassroots Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House (DTES NH) embraces people of all ancestries, genders, ages and descriptions; annually welcoming almost 9,000 DTES residents in a community where 70% of our neighbours have low‐incomes, 700 are homeless and 5,000 are under-housed. Those who built the DTES NH put the Right to Food at the heart of our work, as nutritional vulnerability was a theme familiar to all. Our goal around the Right to Food is to reform the nutritional impact, quality, abundance and delivery of food in the DTES in consultation with residents, community food providers, non‐food community organizations, healthcare professionals, policy makers, growers/suppliers, food/beverage industry professionals and researchers. Learn more about our organization & programs at dtesnhouse.ca The DTES NH acknowledges and honours the fact that our community lies within the Unceded Territory of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
