Tax Return Volunteer (FIRST UNITED)

First United processes thousands of income tax returns for low-income Downtown Eastside residents to enable them to access vital benefits. In 2023, First United recouped over $600k for community members.

Reporting to the CVITP Income Tax Coordinator, Tax Return Volunteers meet with community members to assist them in the preparation and submission of income tax returns.

The duties & responsibilities of the Tax Intake Volunteer are as follows:

- Prepares tax returns applying all appropriate adjustments, deductions and credits to ensure maximum benefit for community member.
- Maintain files for all clients
- Report any issues to the CVITP Income Tax Coordinator


Skills & Experience:

- Minimum of 2 years recent experience in income tax preparation and or accounting. 
- Thorough and current knowledge of CRA regulations.
- Computer literate and sound knowledge of tax preparation software, filing systems and database management. Specifically, UFILE
- Strong attention to detail with exemplary accuracy and strong numeracy skills.
- Ability to gather relevant information and explain tax related issues clearly
- Ability to register and apply for CVITP Income Tax program through CRA. 

Schedule & Timeframe:

- Must be available during the Tax season (March, April, and May)
- Flexible hours but position requires a commitment of 1-2 shifts per week of approx. 2-3 hrs throughout the tax season.
Certification or Education Required
- - 2+ years experience in tax preparation or accounting
- Ability to register with CVITP Income Tax Program through CRA
- UFILE experience
