Food Stash Foundation
Food Stash Foundation is a Registered Canadian Charity that was founded in 2016. We rescue surplus, perishable food from suppliers and redirect it to local charities and households in our community experiencing food insecurity.
Our mission is to prevent good food from going to waste and provide dignified food access to promote a thriving planet and a healthy community. We remove barriers to food access through weekly food box deliveries to our members' doorsteps, our weekly Rescued Food Market, and partnerships with nonprofits who have their own food security programs.
We also reduce the environmental impacts of food waste, such as emissions from good quality food decomposing, and recyclable packaging ending up in landfills. We partner and advocate to address the unsustainable food production, procurement, marketing and distribution practices, which currently result in 1/3 of the global food supply being wasted or lost.
Through all that we do, we foster awareness around how our food choices impact people and the planet and show how food is too valuable to be wasted.
On average we rescue over 100,000 lbs of surplus food per month from our suppliers, which include food retailers, wholesalers, and farms.
Using our small food rescue vehicle fleet, we deliver around 75% of the food we rescue directly to our 30+ local nonprofit partners who use the food in their community programs.
About 15% of the rescued food is brought back to our warehouse to be sorted and distributed through our weekly Rescued Food Market, and through our Rescued Food Box program, which delivers nutritious, customized food boxes to our 100+ members.
We require help from volunteers to help sort food, pack Rescued Food Boxes, and help run the Rescued Food Market.
