Youth Worker - Volunteer Position

7400 23rd St SE, Calgary, AB, T2C0X9 [map]
20 hours / weekly
This is an ongoing volunteer position.
In the early school years, children transition from being exclusively within a family structure to gaining some level of independence and yet they still need a sense of safety, a sense of community, activity, food security and other supports so that they can succeed in life. They are otherwise at risk of falling into patterns of behavior that lead to crime, membership in gangs and failure/dropping out of school. There are thousands of kids in Calgary who, through no fault of their own, do not have the support, activity, and role modelling needed for them to thrive in school, in the playground and in life. Youth Centres of Calgary aims to offer a free centre for kids in a high-needs community.

Youth Centres of Calgary is an inner city, non-profit organization that has established a “home away from home” after-school-focused youth centre for at-risk 9 to 15 year-old youth in Calgary. The centre offers nutritional meals, homework help, sports, games, mentorship, music lessons, art, support, and friendship to Ogden youth every day.

The youth centre is situated in a cozy and happy renovated home, just off Glenmore Trail, in the neighborhood of Ogden. The hours of operation during our After-School programming are, 3 - 6pm Monday to Thursday and 1 - 5pm on Fridays. The centre has the capacity to welcome approximately 30 to 40 youth in a day. The centre is not open on statutory holidays. In the summer, YCC offers kids a free summer sports camp on weekdays.

YCC is opening a second centre in Forest Lawn and we are looking for volunteers who are willing to help at both centres.

A Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check is needed to volunteer at YCC. We can help with the process but volunteers will only be able to volunteer at YCC after the Police Check has been handed in.
Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
Experience supervising youth.
Experience leading youth in activities.
Communication & Time Management skills.
Volunteering at a fun place and creating bonds with youth.
