Capoeira Academy is looking for new volunteers and board members: Collective liberation through ancestral traditions

Ongoing
Are you interested in collective liberation and nurturing resilient and healthy inner city communities? The Capoeira Academy is looking for new board members and volunteers at large, including the following executive positions : vice president, treasurer and secretary. You do not need to be familiar with capoeira to join us in our mission! Our goals as an organization are to find creative ways to sustain capoeira in Edmonton while keeping it accessible and affordable, as well as use our studio space to host community partnerships, events and activities that align with capoeira's community values.

Since 2001 our organization’s purpose has been to share the beauty and wisdom of Afro-Brazilian culture and history through movement, music, art and dance that embraces all ages and abilities. Capoeira weaves together the traditional music, dance, combat style and oral history of enslaved Africans in Brazil. It allowed them to express themselves through music and dance while secretly training in the art of self-protection, liberation and combat. Long deemed illegal by the Brazilian government because of its capacity to uplift and liberate, capoeira was only decriminalized in the 1930s. Today, we join capoeiristas around the world in continuing to celebrate this form of expression and its teachings for creative community empowerment. Through our classes and performances we raise awareness of this rich history while also exploring how these teachings can guide us in nurturing diverse, compassionate and empowered communities here in Edmonton. Mestre Reni Ferreira, our lead instructor has been studying capoeira with the Associação de Capoeira Mestre Bimba (the oldest capoeira school) in Brazil since he was 8 years old and has been teaching it in Edmonton for over 20 years now.

We currently operate out of a studio in Norwood and are looking for new board members, but we also welcome anyone who might be interested in volunteering any of the following skills: website design, accounting, photography, event planning, facility maintenance, grant writing, marketing, communications, social media expertise and more! Students are welcome!
Why should you volunteer for this opportunity?
Our community is family-friendly and we have a lot of fun building and enjoying community together. Volunteers will have opportunities to gain experience in strategic planning, bookkeeping, marketing and communications, grant writing, event planning, website design, photography, as well as participate in our social gatherings where we celebrate music, dance, food and culture
