ALERT - Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team Society

The Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team (ALERT) is dedicated to animal welfare through the preparation for and the actual evacuation, rescue and shelter of domestic animals and non-commercial livestock in a disaster. Volunteers are mobilized when local and/or provincial authorities request ALERT’s expertise. ALERT's service area covers the Regional Districts of the Central Okanagan and the Okanagan-Similkameen.
During an evacuation response, ALERT's volunteer members are active in a variety of different roles that could have them working with animals who have been evacuated or are sheltering in place; interacting with evacuees; doing administrative roles; or working alongside the local authority (this includes fire departments, Emergency Support Services, Emergency Operations Centres, the RCMP, Ministry of Agriculture, and/or personnel from the Ministry of Emergency Management Climate Readiness BC). During non-disaster time, ALERT members train for future responses; are involved in fundraising activities or public education events; participate in team-building social activites; hold work bees to prepare sites for future use as animal intake facilities; and prepare for future disasters. Volunteer members have flexible volunteer schedules and are able to flt their volunteer schedule into their work and personal routines as they can when there isn't a disaster but during a large scale disaster, all volunteer members need to be available for at least one shift.
