Program Assistant (Richmond, BC)
The Stroke Recovery Association of BC provides services, education and advocacy to those affected by stroke, throughout every stage of recovery. Our mission is to empower survivors to live fulfilling, independent lives post-stroke. Our vision is for every stroke survivor to move through recovery with hope and support to lead a full and rewarding life. We work in partnership with March of Dimes Canada (MODC). The Stroke Recovery Program supports stroke survivors find their way after stroke. The Program Assistant plays an active role in engaging with participates to gain the most from the program. The purpose of the program is to provide stroke survivors the opportunity to connect with other stroke survivors in the community and enjoy social interaction and peer support. The Program Assistant will have a direct role in supporting those with communication disabilities to actively engage in program activities. Tasks: • Assist and participate in weekly program sessions • Actively support the Program Instructor in the delivery of program sessions • In collaborative effort with the Program Instructor, the Program Assistant, prepare, plan and facilitate enjoyable and engaging activities for the group sessions • Ensure ongoing communication with the Program Instructor and Group Facilitator prior to and following all in-person sessions • Forward any requests or queries received from participants related to health and community resources and supports to the Program Instructor on a timely basis • Complete room set up and clean up before and after session • Utilize a variety of supportive communication strategies that support participants with communication challenges to participate fully in program activities • Adhere to COVID protocols and requirements for group environments • Respect others’ privacy, wishes, values, rights and beliefs • Record and report volunteer hours on a monthly basis Requirements: • 19 years of age or older • Clear Vulnerable Sector Check • Education and/or experience in social services or related field • Lived experience as a stroke survivor, caregiver, or someone with knowledge of/experience with individuals affected by stroke and communication disabilities an asset • Ability to take initiative • Strong interpersonal and communication skills • Ability to take and give verbal and/or written direction and follow through to complete assigned tasks • Reliable, understanding, collaborative and respectful • Team-oriented, personable • Prior volunteer experience an asset In-person in Richmond weekly on Mondays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
